October 2022 Books Read

I didn’t get a whole lot of books read this month, but I really enjoyed all the books that I read. There’s been a lot going on in my personal life, so I haven’t felt like reading a whole lot. I’ll talk about it a bit down below, if you’re interested.

Phoebe and Her Unicorn by Dana Simpson

Do you believe in unicorns? Phoebe does. She has no choice … one day she skipped a rock across a pond, and hit a unicorn in the face. Improbably, this resulted in a lasting friendship between Phoebe and the unicorn, one Marigold Heavenly Nostrils. Come along for the unicorn ride with Phoebe, as she deals with the usual burdens of childhood (cruel classmates, gym class, piano lessons) and also some unusual ones (magic hair, candy-breathing dragons, and the legendary Shield of Boringness). Can a precocious little girl and a self-absorbed mythical forest creature find common ground? Indeed they can, and that’s how Phoebe and Her Unicorn unfolds.

This was so cute! I loved the art style a lot. I really want to read more in this series.

Blindsided by Teralyn Mitchell

They thought they were on their way to happily ever after. They were wrong… After a blissful four months together, Lou and Jace thought they had it all. Everything was going perfectly. But the problem with perfection, is that there’s only one way for the relationship to go. Down. When his ex shows up in their small town and blindsides him with a potentially devastating secret, Jace knows the choices he makes next will either strengthen or destroy the life he’s only started building with Lou. There’s no doubt they love each other. But between communication breakdowns, past hurts, and complications neither of them saw coming, is love enough? Or are Jace and Lou better off going their separate ways once and for all?

I loved this! So much happens but I love how it ended and couldn’t put it down.

Bizenghast Vol. 1 by Alice LeGrow

When a young girl moves to the forgotten town of Bizenghast, she uncovers a terrifying collection of lost souls that leads her to the brink of insanity. One thing becomes painfully clear: The residents of Bizenghast are just dying to come home.

This was good. Pretty creepy at times. I really want to read more of this series.

Hope & Languish by Chenelle Bremont

An uplifting book of poems, Hope and Languish takes us on an emotional journey from the first news of the pandemic, through isolation, and finally to a place of hope.

I really enjoyed this poetry collection. This isn’t my typical genre but I really enjoyed it.

Twelves Graves of Christmas by Jill Monroe and Gena Showalter

Mix a murderous cat with a goofy corgi. (Ignore any hissing. That definitely probably means the two ingredients are blending amazingly well.) Then add a landlocked cemetery allegedly peppered with gold-stuffed coffins. Whisk in a gravekeeper convinced a family curse forever dooms her to lose any man she loves. Marinate with a ridiculously charming ex-special agent whose muscles and lopsided smile make her forget said curse. Toss in a pinch of mystery courtesy of an old, coded treasure map and crank up the heat. Broil, baby! If no one dies, serve with a smile. If they do, smile wider. And maybe, just maybe, Jane can solve a series of bewildering clues, end the curse for good, and finally find her own happily ever after. Or not.

This was so cute and funny! I love Jane and Conrad so much. All the characters in here are amazing. I can’t wait to read the next book.

Dreaming About the Boy Next Door by Sarah Sutton

Is being voted Most Likely To: Never Have Their First Kiss by the popular crowd at school the end of the world? Probably not, but I’m still not convinced. Does it mean that I have to find someone to kiss to ditch myself of the label? No, but I do it anyway. Is choosing my best friend’s twin brother as my first kiss the best choice? Ha, not in the slightest. But when he walks into his kitchen after midnight shirtless, inspiration strikes. Even though it’s a bad, bad idea. Because what is supposed to be a quick, three-second peck of awkwardness turns into however many seconds of pure bliss. I’m talking the kind of kiss in a rom-com that totally would’ve made me blush. The kind that makes your toes curl. For my first kiss ever, Reed Manning isn’t holding back. But now he makes it crystal clear: the kiss that was life-changing to me means nothing to him. He’s already got his next girl lined up on his own list of Brentwood High’s most eligible, and it’s not his little sister’s best friend. Except that kiss totally messed with my brain chemistry, and I find myself thinking about Reed in ways I never have before. In ways my best friend would hate me for. Even when I shouldn’t, I find myself dreaming about the boy next door.

This was so good! Super cute and emotional. I cried so much. As always, the characters are absolutely amazing.

Lore Olympus Vol. 3 by Rachel Smythe

All of Olympus–and the Underworld–are talking about the God of the Dead and the sprightly daughter of Demeter. But despite the rumors of their romance, Hades and Persephone have plenty to navigate on their own. Since coming to Olympus, Persephone has struggled to be the perfect maiden goddess. Her attraction to Hades has only complicated the intense burden of the gods’ expectations. And after Apollo’s assault, Persephone fears she can no longer bury the intense feelings of hurt and love that she’s worked so hard to hide. As Persephone contemplates her future, Hades struggles with his past, falling back into toxic habits in Minthe’s easy embrace. With all the mounting pressure and expectations–of their family, friends, and enemies–both Hades and Persephone tell themselves to deny their deepest desires, but the pull between them is too tempting, too magnetic. It’s fate.

I loved this! So cute and we get more Hades and Persephone content. I love getting to see their relationship and can’t wait to see what happens next.

Love Like This by Bethany Monaco Smith

We had feelings for each other and denied it. We fell for each other and we messed it up. We’ve grown and changed, but through it all—even the hardest moments—we never gave up on each other. We never gave up on us. Now I know we never will. After everything, we have our chance to get it right. I have no doubt it will be hard. It’ll push our limits and test our love. We both have plenty more learning and growing to do. But this time, we’re in it together, and no matter what, we’re going to keep building our life together, stronger every day. This is just the beginning, and I love knowing that wherever the road leads us, his hand will be wrapped around mine for the entire journey. Because it’s always been us, and it always will be. Follow Rae and Aaron as they embark on the journey to their happily ever after filled with plenty more twists and turns, emotional & swoony moments, and so much love.

So good and emotional! I’m so glad Rae and Aaron got their relationship fixed. This ended great and I can’t wait for the other character’s books.

One More Wish by Loren Beeson

Coraline’s had the hots for Joshua Thomas from the moment he waltzed into one of her parents’ elaborate Christmas parties. But after years of pining after the pilot, not even working the same flight is enough to convince her to finally confess her crush. When a massive winter storm delays their flight back home, stranding the crew on the beautiful—often deemed magical—island of Topica Bay, Coraline finds herself coerced into planning an impromptu Christmas party with none other than the man of her dreams. Locking herself away for the next forty-eight hours and swearing off any feelings for the irresistible captain is tempting… But what might happen if she caved and risked her heart on a silly Christmas wish?

This was a cute, short holiday romance! I loved the characters, romance, and humor. This Novella is in the Let’s Get Naughty anthology that comes out today, November 1st.

Vegas Baby by Melanie A. Smith

Sebastian Hernandez, a Las Vegas paramedic, is called to tend to a fallen performer in an acrobatic performance gone wrong. When he locks eyes with the dark beauty, her gaze holds so much more than the pain of her injury, and he’s drawn to her in a way he’s never been drawn to anyone before. Kira Luan, an aerial acrobat, is trapped in a contract that keeps her at the mercy of her controlling ex-boyfriend. While she longs for a life free to perform, to live, and to find love, fear rules her every move. So much so that it distracted her to the point of injury. When Kira is left with little choice but to accept Sebastian’s help — and offer of a place to stay — the distance from her problems and her growing closeness with Sebastian begin to crack open the well of her suppressed desires. With him, she heals in more ways than one and finally has the strength to end the relationship with her ex. But now, both of their lives will be in danger as Kira faces her past to fight for her future. Will she win her freedom and the chance to be with Sebastian, or will she lose it all?

This was good! I loved Sebastian so much. The twists in here were great. This is part of the Hot Vegas Nights series.

Bittersweet Promises by Carrie Ann Ryan

Leif Montgomery fell hard for Brooke Alder in Paris when they were young, and he thought their fling was just an early taste of what life had in store for him. But life had other plans, and he didn’t find that kind of love—or see Brooke’s face—for years.  Until he visits his cousin’s house and sees who’s moved in next door. They’ve both changed: she’s a struggling single mom, he’s running from a past he’s trying to hide while opening up a new tattoo shop. Yet the moment he sees her again, he knows she’s the one for him. And with one look, Brooke knows that she can’t fight the desire that pulled them together before, despite the skeletons in both their closets.

I loved this so much. The characters are amazing and I can’t wait for the next book. This book makes me want to read the books where the main character is younger.

Those are all the books I read this month! Did you read any good books this month?
