Last weekend my family and I took a trip to Goliad. We had such a good time in the few days that we were there. When planning out trip, there wasn’t a whole lot of information on the area so I really wanted to help with that. I’ll try to include everything we did, as well as lots of pictures. Enjoy!
Day 1:
We drove down there on a Thursday with our RV to Angels In Goliad RV park. The RV park is very nice as are all the people we encountered. They have free wifi, cable, and hookups for a great price. They do also have a shower and laundry room as well.
Once we got set up, we drove over to the Fannin Battleground State Historic Site. You learn a lot about the Battle of Coletto Creek and all the people involved. They even have a small museum, old bandstand, and a shelter that can be used for picnics or whatever you like. The views are incredible, but the history is even better. This is free to go to, and definitely something see.
We went back to our campsite after this and relaxed.
Day 2:
We started our morning, by going to some of the shops in town. There are a lot of cute stores that we just had to check out. We then walked around the park to see The Hanging Tree. This was used for (you guessed it) hangings. They also have a lot of plaques around that remember members of the military. We went to the free museum that they had in town also. There were a lot of cool antiques there that you don’t get to see every day. We went and got lunch afterwards at a food truck called Deborah’s Kitchen Table before going back to the RV. The food was so good and pretty cheap too.
We wanted to walk off some of the food, so we ended up going to Goliad State Park to explore. We went and saw the Mission Espíritu Santo and all its glory. It is a pretty awesome place with lots of history. We did a hiking trail near here too that lead to where they fired the brick for the wall around the Mission Espíritu Santo. Once we were back, we drove around the park for a bit. The park fee is $4 a person for a day trip.
We drove over to Presidio La Bahía next. This was a fort that was involved in the Battle of Goliad in October 1835, and the Goliad Massacre in March 1836. Both battles really helped shape the Texas Revolution. Seeing all the artifacts they discovered plus getting to see where Fannin and his men were was pretty amazing. You do pay $5 each adult, which is totally worth it.
From there, you can drive a very short ways and see the Angel of Goliad statue as well as Fannin Memorial Monument. Both are free to see. We went back to camp after this. It was a very rainy day and we were soaked. We spent the rest of the afternoon at our campsite.
Day 3:
We spent our last day in Cuero, which is about a thirty minute drive. There were several museums we wanted to check out, the Cuero Heritage Museum and the Pharmacy and Medical Museum of Texas. Both are free and filled with some very interesting things. We looked around at the shops for a while before going and eating at Monster Burger Sports Bar and Grill. Oh my, this was some amazing food! The owner is very nice and friendly as well. He has tons of spooky things in there as well, if that’s something you’re into. He loves horror movies and has huge exhibits all in the restaurant. I took a few pictures, but there was so much more. Very full, we drove back to our RV and spent the rest of the day there.
We left the next morning. While it was a short trip, it was so good. I learned a lot about our history and the history of the area. This is a great place to go if you are a history buff or want to learn more about Texas history.
Thank you all so much for reading. Hope you enjoyed this! Until next time.
