October 2023 Reads

I read a lot in October. This has been my best month of the year and a very spooky one at that. I had a lot of great reads and some that I didn’t love. These are reviewed as I read them, so some books are a part of series and a few are out of order (whoops…). Hope you enjoy!

Ghosts by Raina Telgemeier

Catrina and her family are moving to the coast of Northern California because her little sister, Maya, is sick. Cat isn’t happy about leaving her friends for Bahía de la Luna, but Maya has cystic fibrosis and will benefit from the cool, salty air that blows in from the sea. As the girls explore their new home, a neighbor lets them in on a secret: There are ghosts in Bahía de la Luna. Maya is determined to meet one, but Cat wants nothing to do with them. As the time of year when ghosts reunite with their loved ones approaches, Cat must figure out how to put aside her fears for her sister’s sake – and her own.

This was really good and sad at times. I really liked the health rep in here.

In The Grasp by Cadence Keys

Jack-I’m at the top of my game, and the most notoriously private player in the league, but my personal life leaves something to be desired. I thought I’d have more accomplished by now – like a wife and family – but for nine years I’ve held onto the memory of the girl who got away. Now she’s back and I’m more determined than ever to make her mine. For good this time. Paige-After years of working tirelessly, I just landed my dream job at the largest newspaper on the west coast. Unfortunately, that lands me in the same city as the man who broke my heart nearly a decade ago – the same one I’ve never really been able to let go of. When my editor assigns me to write an exposé on Jack, I’m forced to decide where my loyalties lie – with the career of a lifetime, or the love of my life.

I loved this! Such a fun, sweet story. I loved the characters and really want to continue this series.

Ghosthunters and the Incredibly Revolting Ghost by Cornelia Funke

Nine-year-old Tom can’t catch a break: He’s a klutz, his sister Lola pretty much hates his guts, and–and this is a BIG “and”–he just found a ghost camping out in his cellar. Lucky for Tom his grandma’s best friend just happens to be the world’s foremost ghosthunter. Under her expert tutelage, Tom learns the tools of the trade–which just happen to include buckets of graveyard dirt–and soon finds he has to face down not just the Averagely Spooky Ghost (ASG) in his basement but the Incredibly Revolting Ghost (IRG) in town. All while keeping the nettlesome Lola off his trail….

This was so much fun and I really want to continue the series.

The Ancient Magus’ Bride vol. 1 by Kore Yamazaki

Her name is Chise Hatori, a penniless orphan troubled by visions. Sold as a slave to an inhuman mage, she is about to begin a strange new life, filled with magic, fairies, and other beings of a fantastical nature.

This was so good! I really want to continue this series. I loved the art and the storyline.

One Last Time by Corinne Michaels

I’m getting really good at cutting my losses. First, the husband. Divorcing him was the best decision I ever made. But between single-parenting and job-hunting, I can’t catch my breath. When a celebrity blogging position falls into my lap, I’m determined to succeed. That is, until I get my first assignment and actually see Noah Frazier for the first time . . . practically naked and dripping wet. My heart races and I forget how to form complete sentences. His chiseled abs, irresistible smirk, and crystal blue eyes are too perfect to be real. So, what do I do? Get drunk and humiliate myself, of course. I’m ready to forget the awkward night, yet Noah has no intention of allowing me to move on. Instead, he arranges for me to write a feature on him, ensuring a lot more time together. One embarrassing moment after another, one kiss after another, and before I can stop myself, I realize—I’m falling in love with him. But when the unthinkable happens, can I even blame him for cutting his losses? What I wouldn’t give for just one last time . . .

I loved this! So sweet and I loved the romance. Loving this series!

This was good. I liked the plot and romance, it just left me feeling like it was a bit lacking. This was part of the Realm of Midnight anthology.

Blood & Bone by Paula Dombrowiak

Jack O’Donnell is a middle-aged rock star with a long history of bad decisions. When unimaginable circumstances bring Jack and journalist Erin Langford, together, the two embark on a journey through Jack’s past where he recounts the rise and fall of his band and the profound bond he shared with his former bandmate and collaborator. Erin Langford is a seasoned journalist tasked with writing a piece on Jack O’Donnell for a popular music website. While she had preconceived notions about Jack’s rock star image and evasive nature, she learns there is far more to his story than just the headlines. As Jack reveals the heart-wrenching details of his past, the feature she thought she was going to write, turns into so much more.

I loved this so much! Really enjoyed the way this story was told. Gave me Eddie and the Cruisers vibes. I NEED the next book now!

Took by Mary Downing Hahn

“Folks say Old Auntie takes a girl and keeps her fifty years—then lets her go and takes another one.” Thirteen-year-old Daniel Anderson doesn’t believe Brody Mason’s crazy stories about the ghost witch who lives up on Brewster’s Hill with Bloody Bones, her man-eating razorback hog. He figures Brody’s probably just trying to scare him since he’s the new kid . . . a “stuck-up snot” from Connecticut. But Daniel’s seven-year-old sister Erica has become more and more withdrawn, talking to her lookalike doll. When she disappears into the woods one day, he knows something is terribly wrong. Did the witch strike? Has Erica been “took”?

This was so creepy and I didn’t really like it. She’s a great storyteller and definitely made me uncomfortable. I did enjoy the ending.

Not Until You by Corinne Michaels

I have two rules in life: 1. No relationships, falling in love or attachments. 2. No sleeping with clients of my interior design firm. Since the last guy turned out to be married, they’ve been easy to follow. Until him. Callum Huxley is a ridiculously sexy Brit, and the connection we have the moment our eyes lock scares the ever-loving hell out of me. Thank God I came to my senses before going back to his hotel where I would’ve ended up naked, panting, and unable to forget him. Thinking I walked away from that night unscathed was stupid. Sure enough, at the biggest meeting of my career waits the CEO of Dovetail Enterprises—him. It might be the most embarrassing moment of my professional life. And breaking my no-client rule might just be the hottest moment of my personal life. Learning to trust has never felt so good, but falling has never hurt so bad.

This was my least favorite of the series but I still loved it. Nicole is hilarious and I love her sense of humor and sassiness. Super sweet and I can’t wait to finish this series.

Ghosthunters and the Bloodthirsty Baroness by Cornelia Funke

Don’t lose your head. Hair-raising things are happening at Gloomburg Castle. Not least because the murderous spirit of a brutal baroness has bodynapped the owner. As ever, the ghosthunters rise to the challenge. But the job gets tricky when Hugo (the Averagely Spooky Ghost) falls for the hideous baroness – love stinks. It’s down to Tom to fight the hag head-on – or maybe off.

This was a lot of fun and I love the characters.

Seven-Year Witch by Angela M. Sanders

Finding your feet in a new job isn’t always easy. That goes double for Josie Way, who’s settling in as Wilfred, Oregon’s, new librarian–and has just discovered she’s a witch. But will her fledgling powers be enough to save her from a spell of murder? While Josie develops her witchcraft with the help of letters left by her grandmother, there are other changes happening in her new hometown. A retreat center is being built at the old mill site, and rumor has it that the location is cursed. That piques Josie’s interest almost as much as Sam Wilfred, handsome FBI agent and descendent of the town’s founder… When Sam’s soon-to-be ex-wife, Fiona, goes missing at the same time that a bloodied weapon is found, Josie enlists her witchy insight, and her cat familiar, to clear Sam’s name. But then the mill project’s architect is found dead, and it’s clear that someone has been drawing up a vicious plan. Now Josie will have to divine her way out of fatal mischief, before this deadly trouble turns double…

I really enjoyed this! I need to go back and read the first one then continue this series.

If I Only Knew by Corinne Michaels

My life was perfect – until a shocking tragedy pulled the rug out from underneath me. My children were left without a father. I was without a husband and a provider. Instead of wallowing in my grief, I buried myself in my work at Dovetail Enterprises. Landing the promotion as the CEO’s right hand was exactly what I needed. Getting saddled with Milo Huxley as an assistant is exactly the opposite. I can’t stand him. He’s arrogant, irresponsible, and out for my job. As if that’s not bad enough, he has to be devastatingly sexy, and have a posh English accent that makes me squirm on top of it all. I’ve had enough unpredictability for one lifetime, thank you. But soon enough, we’re fighting less and laughing more. He’s there for me when no one else is. And those good looks aren’t the only panty-dropping thing about him. If I only knew what to do about it . . .

I loved this so much! This was probably my favorite of the series. Loved the romance and all that happens with the trial.

Not A Happy Family by Shari Lapena

In this family, everyone is keeping secrets–especially the dead. Brecken Hill in upstate New York is an expensive place to live. You have to be rich to have a house there. And they don’t come much richer than Fred and Sheila Merton. But even all their money can’t protect them when a killer comes to call. The Mertons are brutally murdered the night after an Easter Dinner with their three adult kids. Who, of course, are devastated. Or are they? They each stand to inherit millions. They were never a happy family, thanks to their capricious father and neglectful mother, but perhaps one of them is more disturbed than anyone knew. Did one of them snap after that dreadful evening? Or was it someone else that night who crept in with the worst of intentions? It must be. After all, if one of your siblings was a psychopath, you’d know.

This was so intense and such a page turner. I never could guess who the killer was. I do wish the ending would have been different though.

Absolutely Not In Love by Jenny Proctor

My requirements for a man are simple. Must love books. Must NOT love hockey. Which is why I will never be interested in my neighbor, the aloof and mysterious Felix Jamison, no matter how many books I see him hauling into his apartment. Unless he loses his pro hockey skates, I’m out. But then he shows up at my symphony concert. And I catch the sweet strains of Bach floating across the hall. Have I mentioned how incredible he looks in his game day suit? Still, my history with hockey is complicated. My older brother played, and let’s just say he stole enough limelight to land a plane at midnight. I was forced to be a part of that world for so long, now that I have a choice, it’s the last thing I want. But something tells me Felix is about to change my mind…

I loved this so much! I adored the characters and this was such a cute romance.

Witches Get Stuff Done by Molly Harper

From the moment Riley Everett set foot in Starfall Point, magic bubbled inside of her. But with only her late aunt’s journals and a cantankerous live-in ghost butler to instruct her on all things witchy—including her newly inherited Victorian haunted house—Riley seeks out a coven for sisterhood and support. The last person she expects to be drawn to is the town’s frustrating, yet ridiculously attractive head librarian. Edison Held knows almost everything there is to know about Starfall Point, but Shaddow House was always off-limits, thanks to its elusive owner. If he can convince the new owner, Riley, to let him take a peek inside, there’s so much he could learn. But as he gets closer to Riley, he’s fascinated by her dazzling wit and fiery spirit. Edison will do whatever he can to help Riley keep her family legacy alive, especially if it means spending more time with the captivating new witch in town.

I really enjoyed this. I loved the characters and the fun premise. I can’t wait to see what happens next.

Cruel Intentions by Cora Kent

A spark is harmless until it starts an inferno. Her mother is a homewrecker; I have no doubt that she is, too. She bats her eyelashes and pretends she’s innocent, but I know the truth. The blood in her veins is made of mud, and I will purify it. Kaye Pennington is the daughter of the woman that ruined my life, now I will ruin hers. It’s not fair; nothing in life ever is. When her innocence has been plucked like a flower…When she’s been made to pay for her sins… When she stands before me a broken reed…Her mother’s debt will be repaid. Until then… she’s mine. And I do whatever I want with my property.

I really enjoyed this book. I really liked these characters and loved how much Xavier changed. This is a dark romance and I can’t wait for the next book.

Blaze by Sarah Jaeger

Blaze is the third book in The Ardelean Bloodline series and the second part in a duet. An ongoing plot connects each book in the series, and this story does end on a cliffhanger of sorts. Each book in The Ardelean Bloodline will need to be read in order.

I loved this! Finn and Lena’s relationship is amazing. Loving this series and can’t wait to see what happens next.

Threads of Fate by Lexi Esme

RHIANNE- With my car dead, and no way home, an inconvenient night quickly takes a turn for the worse. I’m pursued deep into the woods, my heart pounding with unbridled fear, and I’m certain this is it. I’m going to die out here, in the cold and dark. Hidden in the shadows, his bright red eyes lure me, drawing me in until I can no longer resist him. I suddenly find myself at the mercy of my new fierce and vicious protector. I wonder if he’s truly the monster I’ve made him out to be? Heaven help me, my inhibitions are falling away and I’m finding myself becoming more and more tangled in this creature’s web of seduction… Only, there’s something else. Something more. He’s keeping a secret, he’s holding back something dangerous. And I just might be the one to set it free… SEPHTIS-Until that fateful night, I’d fought my desires for so long. I would have stayed away from her if that were possible, but I needed her… Dark and smooth, captivating and delectable, she is gorgeous, a feast for my senses. My desire for her burns in every fiber of my being, my lust undeniable. She is my every fantasy made real, temptation embodied… The very thought of being her lover is devastating torture. I’m a monster. She is a human. I’m dangerous. She is untainted. But I want her. My feelings for her are consuming me. I should stay away from her but the temptation is too great, the need too deep. Rhianne has captured my heart, and now the threads of our fates are tied, she is bound to me as I am to her. But I run from my past, from the darkness that once held me captive. It’s something I cannot escape. Rhianne is my salvation, my light in the dark, but I may just be her undoing. She doesn’t know who I am. My secrets threaten to unravel when she becomes entangled in my web, and the monster inside me threatens to destroy us both .

I enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would. The romance was sweet and even though the thought of a spider kinda creeps me out Sephtis grew on me fast and wasn’t creepy at all.

Hell’s Bells and a Bucket of Wings by Cara Wylde

I only wanted a cheat meal after a long day of work subsisting on black coffee. A nice portion of crispy wings, made after my grandma’s special recipe. What did I get instead? A burning air fryer, a hissing cat (poor Milo, he’s too old for my shenanigans), and a winged, horned, red-skinned demon in the midst of all the chaos. And if the fire extinguisher worked on the air fryer, it doesn’t seem to be working on him. Samael, King of Hell, The Seducer, The Destroyer… it takes him a minute to go through all his names and ranks. Meanwhile, I wonder if I fell asleep at my desk and I’m having a crazy dream. He proceeds to say that I’m a witch, and a pathetic one at that. His demonic highness doesn’t have time for me, so I better ask for something or banish him. One problem, though. I don’t know how to do that. It turns out, my family’s secrets are vast, and my own mother has intentionally kept me in the dark. I can’t banish Samael, and not just because I don’t know the spell. I need him to help me discover who I truly am. Can I trust him, though? Of course not. He’s a demon!

I enjoyed this. Wasn’t my favorite of this series though.

Lore Olympus Vol. Five by Rachel Smythe

An ingenious take on the Greek Pantheon, Lore Olympus is a modern update on the story of Hades and Persephone. Follow the propulsive love story of two Greek gods, told with lavish artwork and contemporary sensibilities.

I really enjoyed this! So much happens and I’m dying to see what happens next.

Bait and Witch by Angela M. Sanders

Josie Way loved working among the Library of Congress’s leather-scented stacks—until she uncovered corruption and made herself a target. As Wilfred, Oregon’s new librarian, Josie can stay undercover until the case goes to court. But life in this little town isn’t as subdued as she expected. The library, housed in a a Victorian mansion, is slated to be bulldozed. Still digesting the news that her safe haven is about to become scrap lumber, Josie discovers a body in the woods . . . With help from a spoiled alley cat who just may be her familiar, Josie’s thumbing through a catalog of suspects, hoping she can conjure a way to save her library—and her life. . .

I really enjoyed this! Great start to the series. Even though I did read the first and second book out of order I was still shocked by who the murderer was.

I loved this! So addicting with a beautiful atmosphere. Loved the characters.

Family Like This by Bethany Monaco Smith

Family Like This is the seventh book in the Friends Like This series and the first book featuring Miles and Amelia’s love story. Though it is a new love story, book seven is a direct continuation of the first six books. If you haven’t read them yet, head back to the beginning and jump on the roller coaster in Friends Like This.

I loved this! I’ve waited so long for Miles’ story and it was everything I hoped it would be. The ending of this book though….

The Ex Hex by Erin Sterling

Nine years ago, Vivienne Jones nursed her broken heart like any young witch would: vodka, weepy music, bubble baths…and a curse on the horrible boyfriend. Sure, Vivi knows she shouldn’t use her magic this way, but with only an “orchard hayride” scented candle on hand, she isn’t worried it will cause him anything more than a bad hair day or two. That is until Rhys Penhallow, descendent of the town’s ancestors, breaker of hearts, and annoyingly just as gorgeous as he always was, returns to Graves Glen, Georgia. What should be a quick trip to recharge the town’s ley lines and make an appearance at the annual fall festival turns disastrously wrong. With one calamity after another striking Rhys, Vivi realizes her silly little Ex Hex may not have been so harmless after all. Suddenly, Graves Glen is under attack from murderous wind-up toys, a pissed off ghost, and a talking cat with some interesting things to say. Vivi and Rhys have to ignore their off the charts chemistry to work together to save the town and find a way to break the break-up curse before it’s too late.

I really enjoyed this. Such great cozy vibes and I loved the romance.

Spookily Yours by Jennifer Chipman

My cat is a demon. No, that’s not a joke. An actual, real life demon. And he needs my help to break a curse. But what happens when that turns into more? It can never be forever, and yet… I’m falling in love with him anyway.

I loved this so much! The cozy vibes in here were amazing and I adored the characters and romance. I can’t wait for the next book!

For the sake of my club, for the sake of my brothers, who need an answer to this war that is brewing. But having her near me might just be my downfall. This was a very dark book but I really enjoyed it. Such an addicting story!

Hexes from Exes by Katryna Lalock

Revenge comes in many forms. This time, it’s a smoking hot demon. When a quintet of angry ex-boyfriends gathers to exact their revenge on Stephanie, they prepare a pentagram that summons Rick, a revenge demon they had no idea would appear. Determined to ensure she feels the pain she’s caused them all, the exes task Rick with making Stephanie fall in love with someone she can’t have. But hexes, like love, can sometimes take a turn, and Rick soon discovers that Stephanie isn’t quite the monster her exes have made her out to be. The magic-depleted demon realm thirsts for curses like these and the magic they bring, but even that doesn’t stop a love-scorched revenge demon from using his discretion in doling out Stephanie’s curse. Except Rick’s discretion may quickly transform into temptation. Or worse, a forbidden love that could threaten far more than just his home realm’s magical reserves.

This was a lot of fun! Super fast read. The ending was a bit abrupt but very sweet and made me really want to continue this series.

That’s why she’s taking a ghost tour for the very first time. Under pressure from the living and the dead, Katie will have to use all of her magical skills to start an investigation from scratch and avoid half-baked alibis, because this baker kneads to find a killer.

I really enjoyed this! This is the last book for a while and I’ll really miss these charaters.

Haikyu!! Vol. 1 by Haruichi Furudate

Ever since he saw the legendary player known as “the Little Giant” compete at the national volleyball finals, Shoyo Hinata has been aiming to be the best volleyball player ever! Who says you need to be tall to play volleyball when you can jump higher than anyone else?

This was a lot of fun and I really want to continue this series.

Burn for Jack by Aiden Pierce

Jack Calloway is the pumpkin-headed boogeyman of Hallow Hill. As the legend goes, he was a man of wicked tastes, devilish allure, and had a knack for dark magic. He and his lover—my ancestor—were tried as witches and burned at the stake at the edge of Hallow Hill’s pumpkin patch. Some say he made a deal with the devil to spare his lover’s soul and haunts the pumpkin patch to this day, waiting for her return.

This was interesting…not sure how I feel about it.

Verity by Colleen Hoover

Lowen Ashleigh is a struggling writer on the brink of financial ruin when she accepts the job offer of a lifetime. Jeremy Crawford, husband of bestselling author Verity Crawford, has hired Lowen to complete the remaining books in a successful series his injured wife is unable to finish. Lowen arrives at the Crawford home, ready to sort through years of Verity’s notes and outlines, hoping to find enough material to get her started. What Lowen doesn’t expect to uncover in the chaotic office is an unfinished autobiography Verity never intended for anyone to read. Page after page of bone-chilling admissions, including Verity’s recollection of what really happened the day her daughter died. Lowen decides to keep the manuscript hidden from Jeremy, knowing its contents would devastate the already grieving father. But as Lowen’s feelings for Jeremy begin to intensify, she recognizes all the ways she could benefit if he were to read his wife’s words. After all, no matter how devoted Jeremy is to his injured wife, a truth this horrifying would make it impossible for him to continue to love her.

I’ve never not liked a Colleen Hoover book…but I wasn’t a fan of this one. It was very well written, I just didn’t like the twists and didn’t love the characters.

We’re finally finished! Hope this gave you some good book recommendations. I doubt I’ll be able to read this many books next month, but I guess we’ll see. Until next time.
